2D Wednesday BONUS- Brad Bird’s The Spirit pencil test

As a 2D Wednesday bonus, I had to post this cool, little pencil test directed by the talented Brad Bird back in 1980 or so. In general, the animation is nice if a little ‘soft’. I think our general sense of timing and pacing has greatly increased since this was made but it still looks like something that would have been fun to see!

From Youtube:

In 2008 as Frank Miller’s live action feature film based on Will Eisner’s “The Spirit” was being released I wrote a piece for the Los Angeles Times on the time, back in 1980, when I became involved with Brad Bird and Gary Kurtz (producer of the first two “Star Wars” movies) in trying to get into production an animated feature based on “The Spirit” In that piece, which you can read here:http://herocomplex.latimes.com/uncate… I spoke of a pencil test “trailer” for the  proposed film that was made by Bird along with several classmates from Cal Arts, most of whom were working at Disney at the time. Quite a few people who read the article contacted me about seeing the film. I did have it on an old VHS, but it was deep in storage at the time plus as I did not really own the film, I told them they would have to look elsewhere to find a copy. Later, I found the VHS and put it aside. Recently Andrea Fiamma, an Italian journalist writing on the subject, asked again if the film could be seen. As it is a small piece of animation history, I’ve decided to post it here.

I worked as a bricklayer, waiter, office boy… They were all tough jobs that nearly drove me mad. But in the end, I think I learned something from each one of them.

What are some of your favorite projects you’re proud to have been a part of?
That’s hard — but I really enjoyed working on the pilot episodes of ‘Popota’ and ‘Cheese Gang’ TV series. I think everybody did a terrific job and I’m really proud to be part of the animation team.

How did you become interested in animation?
As a child I already like animation, before entering the animation I did many tests of comics, but never went .. haha Some publishers were up interested more do not know what happened was not right, oh one day God took pity on me and Continue reading

2D Wednesday- Stromae-Carmen

This week’s 2D Wednesday comes form the brilliant designer, writer and animator Sylvain Chomet who warns us about the hazards of being online and to actually look up at what’s around us! (Unless you’re reading Animationinsider.com, of course!)

What is your name and your current occupation?
Lucky De, Freelance 2d Flash Animator for web/TV .

What are some of the crazier jobs you had before getting into animation?
Oh I dont know… Construction worker in Toronto in December was fun, Bartender at a Navy bar where you see buff guys singing pre school songs at midnight that was also fun… Or pushing trolleys at the supermarket, i used to get 2 at a time, one for each leg and slide down the hill, that was totally fun. Man really most of the crappy jobs were fun as long as I didn’t take them seriously!

What are some of your favorite projects you’re proud to have been a part of?
Oh a bunch, I loved working with Stephen Brooks on the Ghostbusting Wallstreet short, that was really great. When I was interning at Flux at a young age we did a show which took 4 weeks to make usually in 2, because I was so fast at flash, I was bad at drawing but I knew my shortcuts! Also being a part of the top 3 people in my uni who got to pitch their own idea for an animated series and talking to Rita Street on making cartoon bibles was also an incredible experience! I still have that bible when one day I feel confident in my writing enough to make my own series!

Where are you from and how did you get into the animation business?
Right now I’m in New Zealand, originally from Bulgaria, I’ve always loved animation and I got my first break at Continue reading

2D Wednesday- Die Young

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1RnyPlRce64

For this week’s 2D Wednesday, we have a truly beautiful piece and it was even done as a personal project. Imagine THAT! I can’t even put into words how much I love this piece by Vivienne Medrano called Die Young set to Kesha’s song of the same name. It’s colorful, playful, well animated and well designed. If any of you know her we’d LOVE to do an interview with her!

What are some of the crazier jobs you had before getting into animation?
I have had few jobs before getting into animation but I wouldn’t say any of them were crazy. Mostly shops and cafeteria work, basically anything to keep me working so I could eat and live!

What are some of your favorite projects you’re proud to have been a part of?
I have had two favourite projects, most recently I had the opportunity to pitch a short film, ‘The Night Light Monster’ to my previous studio Fabrique d’Images as part of a competition. The atmosphere for the pitches was really great! The story I pitched won and I directed it the following year. It was a fantastic experience being able to pick my own team and work with some really talented designers and animators. I couldn’t be happier with the result. My other favourite was my first job in animation where I had a fantastic opportunity to go work in China with a few of the graduates from my university. We had just finished Uni and were flying off to Nanjing to work as designers for a feature film they were producing there. The whole experience was amazing. The people, the place and the opportunity to draw and be a part of something like that was really special.

Where are you from and how did you get into the animation business?
I’m from a small town called Thetford in England. I have always loved storytelling, as a child I grew up playing a lot of video games and creating stories with Continue reading
