Portfolio Entertainment’s Freaktown Takes Off Internationally with Cartoon Network in Asia Pacific, Turner EMEA, Disney Southeast Asia and ABC Australia Deals

(October 4, 2015 – Toronto, Canada) – Portfolio Entertainment has signed its first set of international sales deals for the highly-anticipated series Freaktown (52 x 11’) with leading kids’ networks – Cartoon Network in Asia Pacific, Turner’s Kids Networks in EMEA, The Walt Disney Company Southeast Asia and ABC Australia.

Freaktown is the first series to be wholly created and produced inside Portfolio’s new animation studio. The series was commissioned by TELETOON Canada and will debut in 2016.

The series will premiere on Cartoon Network in Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Australia and New Zealand. Turner France has taken the series for Boing in France and in its French-speaking territories in Europe and Africa. It has also been sold to The Walt Disney Company Southeast Asia and ABC Australia.

Freaktown, a kids 6-11 animated series, follows the adventures of skeleton Ben Bones and his freaky friends as they protect their town from takeover by Princess Boo Boo the Bouncy of Sweetlandia.

Freaktown is the last place where it’s cool to be a ghoul.  Mutants and misfits of all sorts are welcome to hang out and just be who they are – freaks.  Best friends Ben Bones – a skeleton with soul – and Lenny – amutant mantis – are living “la vida freaky” as they guard against a massive makeover of the cute and cuddly kind, courtesy of Princess Boo Boo, the spoiled brat ruler of Sweetlandia. Try as she might, Boo Boo and her right-hand bear, Lord Cuddles the Fluffy, simply can’t keep the lid on all Freaktown’sfun.  You see – no one is going to sugar frost Freaktown on Ben Bones’watch! The series is a concept by Peter Ricq and Philippe Ivanusic who are also the creators of The League of Super Evil.

What is your name and your current occupation?
Michael K. Foster, character designer and animator.

 

What are some of the crazier jobs you had before getting into animation?
Not sure if they’re crazy, but when I was younger I was a stock boy for a health food store, talk about nut jobs.  I was a professional mover for three years and spent many of those nights sleeping in the back of the moving truck trying to keep warm in those dirty moving blankets because there was no time to go home.  My first art related job was designing yellow page ads.  Ever see those ads?  That’s pretty much the lowest design job there is.

 

What are some of your favorite projects you’re proud to have been a part of?
Wow, um…I guess one would be a new product for Anagram Intl. a company I used to work for.  They’re a huge national and international mylar balloon company.  Not what you may think of when talking animation, but I was contacted by them with nothing more then an idea and told to make it work.  It was all based around the QR codes that you see everywhere that can be scanned with a smart phone.  I developed a line of character driven mylar balloons for children with themes such as pirates, skateboarders, princess’s & mermaids.  Each balloon had a scannable QR code printed on it and when scanned, a short fun animation played based on the balloon.  It was a way to “continue” the story from the balloon.  The balloons are being sold throughout the U.S.  It may not be a huge deal, but for me, it was something because it started as a blank idea and it turned into something bigger.  This also helped my approach for new clients because it showed that animation is not just for TV and Film, but many other industries.

 

Where are you from and how did you get into the animation business?
I was born in Ann Arbor Michigan and raised in Hillburn NY a small village about an hour north of NYC.  I got into animation some what by chance.  A company I used to work for was in need of some simple character driven animation to help promote a few new products.  My boss came to me and basically said, Continue reading

Job Description

Duties: The Cartoon Network Comedy Animation Development department is looking for a motivated intern to learn about the development process. Ideal candidate will assist in providing coverage for scripts, books and treatments, as well as researching talent and projects, reviewing storyboards, animatics and work prints of current shows in production. Additional duties include but are not limited to converting media, organizing, filing and other various general administrative and clerical tasks. Special projects may be assigned. Candidate will also have the opportunity to sit in on voice records, pitch meetings as well as to pitch their own project at the end of their internship.

Qualifications: In order to facilitate the learning experience, the following qualifications are preferred: Should be able to commit to 12 weeks of the internship and be able to work 15-20 hours per week. Course credit is optional. Should be self-motivated, ability to work in a team environment and multi-task, have a good attitude, and be able to function well in an environment with short deadlines and quick turnaround projects. Student should also have working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs. Preferably a student with a major in either Film or Television who is interested in learning about the Animation Development process specifically. Experience with Final Draft is also preferred.
