Established Studio Embraces Real-Time Animation

The Adobe blogs have an interesting story on Renegade Animation and my old bosses who are using a new Adobe application called Character Animator.

Renegade Animation started out 25 years ago as a boutique commercial house specializing in 2D animation. Its two founders, Ashley Postlewaite and Darrell Van Citters met while working at Warner Bros. in the Looney Tunes commercial unit. Renegade Animation was an early adopter of digital tools to reduce costs and improve efficiency, and that still holds true today. Using many of the apps in Adobe Creative Cloud, the company created a paperless animation pipeline to support the production of animated episodic television, feature films, interactive games, and web and mobile content.

Recently Co-founder and Executive Producer Postlewaite, along with Production Manager Scott Lowe, and Animator and Storyboard Artist Scott Klass tried out another new technology. The team accepted an offer from Adobe to create some demo assets for Adobe Character Animator, a real-time animation tool that transforms static artwork into dynamic puppets.

What is your name and your current occupation?
My name’s Brianne VanPutte, and I work at Renegade Animation in the TD Department.

 

What are some of the crazier jobs you had before getting into animation?
My first job in high school was as a part-time custodian. It was actually not a bad gig, it paid more than minimum wage (which is a high schoolers dream!), and I worked evenings with a friend so we made it a fun job (or at least as fun as cleaning bathrooms and picking gum out of carpets can be)! In college I was a tour guide for the Admission Office and a RA. Being an RA was by far the craziest job I’ve had.

 

What are some of your favorite projects you’re proud to have been a part of?
I have a pretty fond place in my heart for my first internship on Dora the Explorer. It was a production internship, so I wasn’t doing artwork, but the team was really nice, and it was the first time I saw how a television show is created from start to finish.I also interned at Augenblick Studios on the second season of Ugly Americans and for BrainPOP before I started working at Curious Pictures on the fourth season of Team UmiZoomi. Those were all really fantastic experiences!

 

Where are you from and how did you get into the animation business?

What is your name and your current occupation?
Anne Walker, lead character layout artist at Six Point Harness

What are some of the crazier jobs you had before getting into animation?
Working at a party supply store with a (possibly psychotic) owner, bookkeeper at Staples, smoothie wench at the Laguna Beach Jamba Juice. Also I taught piano.

What are some of your favorite projects you’re proud to have been a part of?
Random Cartoons!!! Also, the The Mr. Men Show, and Good Vibes, my current project at 6PH, which is quite possibly the funniest thing I’ve ever worked on.

How did you become interested in animation?
I always loved cartoons, but I really fell in love with telling animated stories in high school.  Mixing storytelling and art made me feel more alive and at home than anything else in my life at the time – including being with my family in my actual home.  I drew more than I listened in class.  I spent prom night working on my epic (read: TERRIBLE) science fiction anime screenplay in my parents’ office.  I was That Sort.

Where are you from and how did you get into the animation business?
I originally came down to southern CA from the Bay Area to go to art school. The first two years at school were a blast; my third year was miserable. One of the high points of that miserable third year was an internship at Cartoon Network studios, where I met (stalked) a number of artists who were generous enough to share their time and wisdom with me. I learned that many of them had never graduated college, or in some cases had never even gone to school, period, and it occurred to me that I could break into the industry without suffering through another expensive year of art school.
