Generates prop designs, turnarounds, special poses and any other prop-related art that the production may require, ensuring style and quality of show is met.  Responsibilities may include but are not limited to:

• Review script/animatic/breakdown list for props needed at handout of show.
•
• Complete all rough, revised and final designs necessary within assigned deadlines.
•
• Resolve design problems with creative supervisors.
•
• Ensure all deadlines are met.
•
• Communicate progress of work to appropriate production staff.
•
• Ensure all artwork is properly backed up and stored appropriately.
•
• Ensure all shipping materials are prepared and ready on time.
•
• Be available for questions until department’s shipment is complete.
•
• Assist with special projects.
•
• If applicable, make special shadow and color indications
•
Qualifications/Requirements
•
• Must demonstrate proficiency in style of show.
•
• Strong prop design and construction/mechanical skills.
•
• Knowledge of or willingness to learn applicable design software and hardware.
•
• Strong time-management skills.
•
• Work well under pressure.
•
• Ability to multitask a plus.
•
Desired Characteristics
•
• Relevant drawing experience necessary
•
• BA in Fine Arts or equivalent work experience highly desired

Watching Jonny Quest as a kid.

San Francisco. Worked my way up from the Hanna-Barbera Stockroom in 5 Months (A company record)

What is your name and your current occupation?
My name is Alen Esmaelian and I work as a Background, Prop, and Character designer at Rough Draft Studios.

 

What are some of the crazier jobs you had before getting into animation?
Nothing out of the ordinary. I’ve been working in this industry for 6 years and prior to that, I used work for Pizza Hut as a customer service representative (fancy way of saying that I used to take customer orders over the phone).

 

What are some of your favorite projects you’re proud to have been a part of?
Without a doubt, my proudest moment was working on Futurama alongside the very talented crew at Rough Draft Studios. I was particularly proud to see my finished designs for Bender’s robot monastery on episode nine of this current season.

What is your name and your current occupation?
Brian Mac Moyer, freelance artist and prop designer

What are some of the crazier jobs you had before getting into animation?
I worked in a textiles plant, converting colored designs into black negative plates for color printing. I was a Romita’s Raider in the Marvel Bullpen and I operated a porcelain press that separated porcelain clay out of a mud called “slip” used for making electric insulators.

What are some of your favorite projects you’re proud to have been a part of?
Megas XLR, I was there from its’ infancy, I helped with the pre-pilot and was hired on as a prop designer when it finally got greenlit by Cartoon Network. That show is the reason I moved to California.  Beavis and Butthead Do America was my first big break. I showed the art director my portfolio and he like what he saw so he had me do a BG test over the weekend. With test finished, I came in on Monday and he wanted to hire me on the spot but the producer said I had to take a layout test. I had no clue how to do layouts but learned while I took the test and got the job.

Where are you from and how did you get into the animation business?

What are some of the crazier jobs you had before getting into animation?
Axe murderer.  Next question.What are some of your favorite projects you’re proud to have been a part of?
My first job out of college was BG clean-up artist on The Goode Family.  It was a Mike Judge show on ABC that few people seem to remember, but it was genuinely funny and I learned a lot while I was there.  Way more than I did from the murdering.
How did you become interested in animation?
