What are some of the crazier jobs you had before getting into animation?
At age sixteen I submitted my illustration portfolio along with a standard application for employment at my neighborhood Kroger and was immediately hired as a cake decorator. They also wanted me to do the in-store illustrations – china markers on the windows and what have you.  I think I started out at $12 an hour. It was way more than any of my friends were making at Bob Evans or Dippin’ Dots or wherever. It was my first job and I was already getting paid (well) to draw….until the US Department Of Labor called two days later and shut me down.  An industrial meat slicer was located within a certain proximity of the cake decorating station and thus there existed the possibility of accidental lacerations. The liability waiver I had signed didn’t count, legally, because I was a minor.  I was immediately demoted to bag boy. I liked bagging groceries because I could chit chat

News: Adobe’s Ink And Slide Tools For The iPad

3_adobe-ink-slide-apps

We reported on this last June when it was called Project Mighty and Napoleon and now it looks like the tools are ready to be released as Tech Crunch has a demo with it.

From the site:

Today Adobe unveiled the Ink and Slide, its first foray into the realm of hardware gadgets. The company describes the pair of gadgets as a “Creative Cloud Pen and Digital Ruler.” Basically, it’s a smart stylus that syncs with your iPad over Bluetooth and offers some nifty features when used together with Adobe Line, a new app available today for the iPad.

The Slide tool looks pointless to me but the Ink stylus is promising. It remains to be seen if it will support palm rejection, in other words not register that your palm is hitting the screen as you rest it to draw. Currently doing so invokes the zoom function ass well as registers the pen tool which creates all sorts of havoc when you’re trying to sketch. If it doesn’t support palm rejection it’s useless as far as I’m concerned and clearly shows that despite developers attempting to cater to artists, they’re not at all clear on how we work. No one wants to hover their hand above the screen for a long period of time and you’ll never be able to use the iPad for a serious work tool until they implement this feature.

You can read the full article on Tech Crunch as well as see a video demo here.

Pressure sensitive stylus for your iMac, iPad & MacBook Pro! by Cregle Inc. — Kickstarter

A reader posted this in the comments of my post yesterday about a Cintiq alternative and I felt it too needed it’s own post. Cregle Inc has come up with  away to turn your iMac, iPad or MacBook Pro into a more or less what is a Cintiq. For small change!

The whole process works by putting calibration discs on the edges of your monitor and having it sync with the included pen. It’s actually pretty damn ingenious if you ask me. It seems the reason it works on the iPad, iMac and MacBook Pro is mostly because they all have glass over their lcds whereas not all monitors do. If i press my monitor it has a squishy feel to it and you get some liquid spreading out from under my finger. I can see my monitor breaking quickly. the iMacs have glass over that part though and so do the iPads and MacBook Pros so it seems it would probably work on anything that has glass on it. Anyway, check the link out below. I hope it gets funded because it could change the way we do business.
