What is your name and your current occupation?
David Concepcion. I work as a Flash Animator and Graphic Designer for a Web Company in White Plains, NY

What are some of the crazier jobs you had before getting into animation?
I was a flower delivery boy at one time. I also worked in a steel mill on a lathe turning out nuts and screws.


What are some of your favorite projects you’re proud to have been a part of?
I started at Don Bluth as an animator straight out of art school. They were in the middle of “An American Tale”.  Since I started late on it I didn’t get full animators credit but I did receive Additional Animation credit.  I also enjoyed working on various TV shows like Mighty Mouse, Doug and Dora the Explorer.  You can see more samples of my work at my blog.

How did you become interested in animation?
When I was a kid, I saw Jungle Book in the theater for the first time. I was mesmerized by it.

Where are you from and how did you get into the animation business?

What is your name and your current occupation?
Mark Lewis. On my most recent gig, I did prop design, color and board revision. I’ve also done character cleanup and design.

What are some of the crazier jobs you had before getting into animation?
I worked in one of the art departments at Lawrence Livermore Lab. People say artists are nuts, but there were stories about things some of the physicists had done… Also, I worked for a while in a sign shop that was headquartered in a storage facility. You were surrounded by corrugated metal, no real insulation, heating or cooling. So it would get freezing cold during the winter months, and into the 100’s inside during the summer months. Hard sometimes to make your hands (and your brain) work in those conditions.

What are some of your favorite projects you’re proud to have been a part of?
Conan: Red Nails has to be one of the coolest projects I’ve worked on. We got to do some things I’d never seen done before in a western-produced animated film. I hope to see that released one day, finished at the same level of quality with which it started. And I was glad to get a chance to work on what turned out to be the last outing for the classic Warners Batman, Batman: Mystery of the Batwoman. There are lot of other projects I could mention, but that’s probably a good place to stop, before the list gets too long.

I delivered pantyhose to liquor stores in East L.A.- I lasted one whole day.

What is your name and your current occupation?
Curt Walstead- freelance illustration

What are some of the crazier jobs you had before getting into animation?
I don’t know, animation is pretty crazy.

What are some of your favorite projects you’re proud to have been a part of?
Dragon Tales, Baby Looney Toons

How did you become interested in animation?
Needed a job after graduating from art school and animation seemed like a fun way to make a living.

Where are you from and how did you get into the animation business?
Grew up in central California in the small agricultural community of Merced. Animation was my first art job out of college.

What’s a typical day like for you with regards to your job?
If I’m on a project, I usually get about around 4:30 am and either sketch out concepts or get on the computer and start doing my finished
art. since I’m freelancing, part of my day will be spent reviewing the freelance job sites and making bids and checking in with my agent.

What part of your job do you like best? Why?
Sketching out my design concepts.

What part of your job do you like least? Why?
Clients that don’t understand the difference between subjective changes versus objective. If it’s subjective, then it varies from person to person and
it’s not really a change that ultimately matters in terms of whether the image works or not. You can end up wasting a day trying to read their mind as
to what they really want which they won’t know until they see it. That’s very frustrating. Also, clients that don’t tell you the whole story until your already
finished with the image.

What is the most difficult part for you about being in the business?
Read the above comment. Also, trying to come up with a fair price. I always seem to be too high or too low with my estimates. You need to cut a balance
between the client’s budget and what your time is worth and you need to be flexible to get the projects.

What kind of technology do you work with on a daily basis?
Adobe Photoshop and sometimes Illustrator.

In your travels, have you had any brushes with animation greatness?
Nope.

Describe a tough situation you had in life.
The great recession of 2008.

Is there any advice you can give for an aspiring animation student or artist trying to break into the business?
Take some business classes.

 What are some of the crazier jobs you had before getting into animation?
Nothing too exciting, I’ve done the usual, line cook, busboy, grocery bagger, Assistant Manager at a local Pharmacy, and more of the same.

 

 What are some of your favorite projects you’re proud to have been a part of?
The project I am currently working on for JMG Studio is very exciting and I’m proud to be a part of it. Sorry I can’t give out too much information at this time.

What is your name?
Becca Ramos

What would you say has been your primary job in animation?
I started out as an animation checker but with my architecture background, I took the bg layout test on “The Simpsons” and that’s when I started wearing two different hats – layout & checking. Then I moved on to design when WB hired me for “Pinky & the Brain.” Since then, I have been switching back & forth doing background design or layout and props, from time to time. 🙂

What are some of your favorite projects you’re proud to have been a part of?
I would have to say “Chowder” would top the list. I loved the style of that show, I still do, even though our department was the only non-digital one because we were hand inking all the bg designs as the style required. Kudos to Carl Greenblatt & Dan Krall, who created the show and art directed it, respectively.
