Lenord Robinson

How did you become interested in animation?
I’d always seen animation as a kid and somehow knew it was done with drawings but didn’t know how. One Sunday, when I was watching Disney’s Wonderful World of Color, they explained how animation was done and my interested started!

Where are you from and how did you get into the animation business?
I’m originally from Atlanta, GA. I was discovered and given my first job by Ralph Bakshi on the Lord of the Rings.

What’s a typical day like for you with regards to your job?
Currently, I’m doing traditional animation on the Smurfs and loving it.

What part of your job do you like best? Why?
Drawing the roughs and acting out the scene in my head. It’s the most rewarding to

see your ideas realized on the screen.

What part of your job do you like least? Why?
Schedules and deadlines, which sadly are created sometimes before scripts are written and approved.

What is the most difficult part for you about being in the business?
Dealing with unpleasant directors and supervisors.

What kind of technology do you work with on a daily basis?
Digicel and Toon Boom.

In your travels, have you had any brushes with animation greatness?
I’ve met 7 of the 9 old men at Disney for starters.

Describe a tough situation you had in life.
We lost our home during the economic downturn in 2008.

Any side projects or you’re working on or hobbies you’d like to share details of?
Not at the moment.
Any unusual talents or hobbies like tying a cherry stem with your tongue or metalurgy?
Is there any advice you can give for an aspiring animation student or artist trying to break into the business?
Don’t just spend all your time trying to find a job. Have a goal as a film maker and create your own projects. The business will open to you when you have something to give.

  1. Lenord is not only an extremely talented animator/storyboard artist/director/producer but he has tirelessly helped many people get into the industry, including myself! I never get tired of hearing his booming voice call out,”Hey, big daddy!”

    • Totally agree… Lenord is an amazing talent! One of the things I remember the best about him BESIDES the “Big Daddy” thing was his draftsmanship abilities. No one could draw a woman better than Lenord! He’d draw a lady so fluid and sexy you actually wished she existed so you could ask her out! Fantastic talent!
