What is your name and your current occupation?

My name is David Pavon and I’m a character designer, illustrator and visual development artist.
What are some of the crazier jobs you had before getting into animation?
I think that I never had a crazy job, because all jobs are necessary, but maybe one time, when I was working as waiter I had to clean a big viscid mass at the bottom of a fridge. I felt like the alien victim.

What are some of your favorite projects you’re proud to have been a part of?
Definitely my first animated short film “Origami”. I was working on it for one year. It was exhausting but was worth.

Where are you from and how did you get into the animation business?

I´m from Spain. Currently I’m unemployed looking for a job or commissions.

What’s a typical day like for you with regards to your job?
Everyday is looking for something to make me better on my career. Everyday (weekends include) I need to do an illustration. It keeps me fresh and more ideas coming to my head.
What part of your job do you like best? Why?

Can do something that I love. Since I was a child, and saw my first movie Pinocchio, I knew that this was what to do.

What part of your job do you like least? Why?

Of course look for a job. In Spain is too difficult work in animation, hence I need to search in internet offers in other countries, but for a foreign is more difficult.

What kind of technology do you work with on a daily basis, how has technology changed in the last few years in your field and how has that impacted you in your job?
I work always with Photoshop and my best friend Cintiq. I had a big change with it, because in the university years I never painted something in digital, always on canvas, and I had to get use with that. Now I need to do first the sketch on paper, scanning and later painting on Photoshop.
What is the most difficult part for you about being in the business?
We are too many people in the same thing and the competition is heavy, so I need to do everyday more personal works and improve my skills.
If you could change the way the business works and is run how would you do it?

Firstly I will give a chance for the 2D animation movies. It´s disappearing and this is a pity. When I have news about the new Studio Ghibli movie or a new animation movie in 2D I get happy, but in case of 3D movies I need that they convince me.

In your travels, have you had any brushes with animation greatness?
I met Glen Keane. He was a nice person and it was a fast amazing moment in my life.
Describe a tough situation you had in life.
I had to work to study animation and my parents had to help me on this too. But too many people has the same situation. The worst was the bulling in the school and high school.
Any side projects you’re working on that you’d like to share details of?
Yes, I do. I just have finished my first graphic novel titled “Eggboy”. This is a story about a little boy with egg head and his dog. He will have to deal with bullying in the school and he will build a rocket to come back to his planet where he thinks to belong. I have put my heart on this and I think is a great story. Other project is my second animated short film. I have done with the preproduction and now I’m looking for a producers interested on it.
Any unusual talents or hobbies like tying a cherry stem with your tongue or metallurgy?

Hahaha. Not this kind of talent. I can play the singstar for all day and tell the whole script from The beauty and the beast, Aladdin and The little mermaid, songs included.

Is there any advice you can give for an aspiring animation student or artist trying to break into the business?
For a student I have an advice: If you don’t have money, you can study for your own with your computer watching on internet a lot of tutorials. You don’t need to attend any art class, you can learn in your house. Only you need patience, be willing and the tools.
