What is your name and your current occupation?
MY NAME IS MATIAS ERRECALDE. CREATOR OF MY OWN ANIMATED CARTOON SHOW.
What are some of the crazier jobs you had before getting into animation?
I ONCE HAD TO DESIGN AND ILLUSTRATE AN ADULT THEMED COMIC OF THE SIMPSONS. IT WAS PORN ACTUALLY. AND I NEVER GOT PAID.
What are some of your favorite projects you’re proud to have been a part of?
I LAUNCHED WITH MY PARTNER A T-SHIRT BRAND CALLED PIGMEN. TRYING TO SEND SOME MESSAGES TO SOCIETY THROUGH OUR ART.
Where are you from and how did you get into the animation business?
I´M FROM ARGENTINA. AND I STARTED ANIMATING AFTER MY BEST FRIEND WAS INSTITUTIONALIZED FOR BELIEVING HE WAS LIVING IN A REALITY SHOW. SOON AFTER GETTING BACK FROM OUR VISITS TO THE MENTAL INSTITUTION I STARTED FEELING A NEED TO EXPRESS WHAT I WAS FEELING AND THINKING ABOUT THE WHOLE SITUATION. SO I CAME UP WITH MY CARTOON SHOW.
What’s a typical day like for you with regards to your job?
I WOULD SIT ON MY CHAIR IN FRONT OF MY COMPUTER, TRYING TO FIND A PRODUCER SO MY IDEAS CAN COME TRUE.
What part of your job do you like best? Why?
WHEN I FINISH. AND HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO SHOW WHAT I´VE DONE TO SOME PEOPLE AND SEE THEIR REACTIONS. I LOVE HOW KIDS CAN UNDERSTAND EXACTLY WHAT I WAS TRYING TO EXPRESS.
What part of your job do you like least? Why?
THE PART WHEN I “HAVE” TO SELL IT. I DON´T LIKE TO MIX ART AND MONEY, UNLESS I ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO DO IT.
What kind of technology do you work with on a daily basis, how has technology changed in the last few years in your field and how has that impacted you in your job?
I´VE LEARNED EVERYTHING BY MYSELF. STARTED WITH COREL PHOTO PAINT WHEN I WAS ABOUT 12 YEARS OLD. AND HAVE LOST A LOT OF ILLUSTRATIONS THAT I DID USING WINDOWS PAINT. AS THE YEARS WENT BY I BEGAN TO LEARN HOW TO USE ADOBE, PHOTOSHOP, ILLUSTRATOR, AND FLASH. I LIKE TO LEARN TO USE THESE PROGRAMS BY MYSELF, BECAUSE THEN THE PRODUCT IS DIFFERENT FROM WHAT YOU USUALLY SEE AROUND. AND I LOVE THAT NOBODY CAN TELL HOW I´VE DONE MY WORK.
What is the most difficult part for you about being in the business?
HAVING TO MAKE MONEY OUT OF IT. I REALLY DON´T LIKE IT.
If you could change the way the business works and is run how would you do it?
I WOULD GIVE JOB OPPORTUNITIES TO THOSE IN NEED TO EXPRESS THEMSELVES. NOT THE ONES WHO HAVE THE PERFECT RESUME. JUST THE ONES WHO REALLY DREAM ABOUT CHANGING PEOPLE´S MIND THROUGH THEIR ART.
In your travels, have you had any brushes with animation greatness?
Describe a tough situation you had in life.
PFFFFF….JUST ONE? I JUST HAVE A BAD TIME WHENEVER I GET TO SEE ONE OF MY LOVED ONES GETTING HURT.
Any side projects you’re working on that you’d like to share details of?
I´M GETTING STARTED WITH MY OWN TATTOO SHOP HERE IN ARGENTINA. 😉
Any unusual talents or hobbies like tying a cherry stem with your tongue or metallurgy?
SOME PEOPLE SAY I GOT “MAGIC HANDS”. AND I USUALLY CURE MY 7 YEAR OLD SON JUST BY RUBBING HIS INJURIES OR GIVING HIM BIG HUGS. I SING TOO.
Is there any advice you can give for an aspiring animation student or artist trying to break into the business?
ENJOY YOUR WORK. DO IT ANY TIME YOU FEEL LIKE DOING IT. DON´T STOP WORKING. AND DON´T THINK OF IT LIKE JUST WORK, IT´S NOT SOMETHING YOU HAVE TO DO. YOU ARE CHOOSING TO USE YOUR TIME ANIMATING, OR DRAWING, OR WRITING. JUST ENJOY IT, AND SHOW WHAT YOU´VE DONE TO SOMEONE ELSE.
