Odair Martins, Junior

What is your name and your current occupation?
My name is Odair Martins Junior, I’m an animator at Loopix Entertainment.

What are some of the crazier jobs you had before getting into animation?
I actually never worked at anything else beside animation, when I knew I wanted to work with it, I used all my free time after college to study, so I didn’t get a job.
What are some of your favorite projects you’re proud to have been a part of?
My favorite project is my classic animation short film, and I’m still working on it.
How did you become interested in animation?
I had 3D software classes, and I realized I like to animate things on the software. So I signed up to 3D character animation classes. Then I went to classic animation, wich I love.
Where are you from and how did you get into the animation business?
I’m from São Paulo, Brazil. I just started in business this year at Loopix Entertainment, where I work as a game animator. I have a friend that was working there before me and he told me they needed an animator, so I sent them my blog and they called me for the job.
What’s a typical day like for you with regards to your job?
Wake up early. Spend hours on traffic. Drinking coffee. Animate the game characters. At night I go to my classic animation classes.
What part of your job do you like best? Why?
To give the character life and personality. I just love when I finish animating something and feels alive to people who watch it.
What part of your job do you like least? Why?
The deadlines. Here in Brazil almost all jobs are publicities and advertisements and the deadlines are very short.
What is the most difficult part for you about being in the business?
The difficult part is when I animate something with some freedom and creativity and I have to redo it because my boss (or the client) wants something more simple and limited.
What kind of technology do you work with on a daily basis?
 3D software, Quicktime.
In your travels, have you had any brushes with animation greatness?
Not yet. I’m going to Siggraph 2011 and I hope to meet someone great.
Describe a tough situation you had in life.
I’m still looking for an Animation college that I can afford in the US or Canada to achive my potencial. But since Real is cheap compared to Dollar, it gets even harder. So I’ve been looking for jobs for a while to save money, and now I got one, but I realized I’ll have to save my entire life.
Any side projects or you’re working on or hobbies you’d like to share details of?
My short film, and a freelance collective I’m starting with some artist friends.
Any unusual talents or hobbies like tying a cherry stem with your tongue or metallurgy?
I’m a dogmaniac.
Is there any advice you can give for an aspiring animation student or artist trying to break into the business?
Never stop studying, don’t be cheap regards to your studies. Always learn with any person’s critiques.
