What is your name and your current occupation?
My name is Cláudio Vieira de Oliveira – Classic Animator 2D .
What are some of the crazier jobs you had before getting into animation?
I started early in animation field, before that i have just worked as an office boy, and at age of 19 I was already working with animation.
What are some of your favorite projects you’re proud to have been a part of?
A feature film called Little Hippo, a 30-minute short film “Los Tres Amigos”, two special (about 15 minutes) for the Cartoon Network TV “CopaToon”, some advertisements for television as one for Faber Castell I did in 1984 called “watercolor” and also being the Animation Director of the world’s second feature film made entirely in CGI. The last one was a big challenge because it was made in 1994 and unlike today had few resources, was a true pioneer.
How did you become interested in animation?
Is hard to say, all this started when i was a child.
Where are you from and how did you get into the animation business?
I’m from Sao Paulo – Brazil and I started in this business with 19 years of age as a cel painter after as inbetweener, and after I got in the advertisement, doing since storyboard until shooting.
What’s a typical day like for you with regards to your job?
Today I’m a freelance, so when I have a job to do I spend my entire day working with small breaks until late night and some times with just few hours of sleep.

What part of your job do you like best? Why?
Scribbling. Because I like the straight-ahead animation, is a more fluid animation.
What part of your job do you like least? Why?
Clean up. Is really boring for me.
What kind of technology do you work with on a daily basis?
Today I use the Cintiq, using the TVPaint software. I like it a lot because I can scribble as with pencil and paper and allows you to animate and already put the sound which helps in lip sync.
What is the most difficult part for you about being in the business?
The irregularity of the frequency of work today. And the lack of professional recognition here in Brazil. The entertainment area isn’t very developed here yet so the brazilian animation is all focused in advertising.

In your travels, have you had any brushes with animation greatness?
I had the pleasure of working along side amazing artists, but I have to give a special attention to 2 of them like the comics artist Inácio Justo with whom i studied anatomy and Jayme Cortez an ilustrator and comics artist, both was in the begging of my carrier, at the animation i has to highlight Daniel Messias with who i started working in 81 and continue collaborating. And I had the happiness to participate on the first steps of Renato dos Anjos when he was starting his carrier in the business as his mentor.
Describe a tough situation you had in life.
They were many but I prefer not to hold on to them. I consider myself very happy.
Any side projects you’re working on that you’d like to share details of?
I have a few projects but they are in the very beginning.

Any unusual talents or hobbies like tying a cherry stem with your tongue or metallurgy?
I’m improving my skills in the kitchen hahaha
Is there any advice you can give for an aspiring animation student or artist trying to break into the business?
Draw, draw and draw as much as you can because if you are not doing, someone is and they can catch your place in the business.
