Muriel Celinger

What is your name and your current occupation?
Hi, my name is Muriel Celinger . I work as a freelancer . I am a 3d characters & designer Also working as a sound  & video designer for gaming.

What are some of the crazier jobs you had before getting into animation?
Music producer a lot of work on stages. A lot of noise and phone calls.

What are some of your favorite projects you’re proud to have been a part of?
Always the last is my favorite. Now it is a 3d game “The hidden treasure of Nahala”.  in this game, i worked as a sound designer and have done the movie trailer animation for the promotion.

Where are you from and how did you get into the animation business?
I was born in Paris and live in Tel-aviv.  I come from the music world, and in the last  ten years I have learned visual arts communication. I worked as a  flash animator when I discovered that my real passion is modeling 3d characters and making animation movies.  In animation, I can compose my music ,record the voice-over, write the script and “create” new characters. The animation is a really open minded world.

What’s a typical day like for you with regards to your job?
When I begin a project, i have no day no night. I`m always thinking on visualizing in my head frame by frame, colors, motions etc… and working.  Like you know, animation  is a lot of work and attention on details, lights, combinations of motions.   I am resting always while I am rendering… and it takes a long time thanks god.  Here is an example of slow motion of a character:

What part of your job do you like best? Why?
3d character modeling! It`s like being Geppetto with Pinoccio. It is always surprising me to see the new character “born”. After that, the best part is to do the soundtrack ! you ask the best? I think that in each level I enjoy a lot. My work is my game!

What part of your job do you like least? Why?
Making changes between frames for corrections. Because it is tiny on the screen and just technical.

What kind of technology do you work with on a daily basis, how has technology changed in the last few years in your field and how has that impacted you in your job?
I work with  graphic design softwares like cs + poser and vegas and swishmax , logic ,acid and soundforge for the music parts and I want to begin with maya and 3dmax.  Yes the new technologie have a great impact in the job, i will add a new computer with a new grafic card to be faster.

What is the most difficult part for you about being in the business?
To be a freelancer is hard and the business is very dynamic so you must  always be  very competitive. Not all the clients understand that is a lot of work. I am working in the gaming business most of the time.

In your travels, have you had any brushes with animation greatness?
As  a child in Paris we were living near a cinema specified for children. just cartoons from the best productions all  day long! The first time I saw the “Aristocats” was a revelation for me.  After that, I discovered that animation is not for kids only. in the Metro, I was looking on all the commercials posters moving  fast while we were crossing the stations like an animation.  I was  playing to remember what was the first frame of each station.
Describe a tough situation you had in life.
When I was 3 years old , a monkey who belonged to my parents friends,  had attacked me .he was attached with a long chaine, but I didn`t know that he had mal-interpreted my gest to give him a banana. he was “hugging” me and all his teeths into my head. i was surprised from his capability to move so fast . perhaps because of this incident I am capable to watch in slow-motion a fast motion.  Never thought about that before…

Any side projects you’re working on that you’d like to share details of?
Ok. I am working on a movie based on a script that I wrote and compose all the soundtracks + the songs of each character.  For now I am working on the modeling of the characters. It will be an animation based on historical events, rich in colors and exotic. I am building the team.

Any unusual talents or hobbies like tying a cherry stem with your tongue or metallurgy?
I know how to twist my arms 90 degrees… changing my voice from a deep gospel voice to a soprano opera and imitating cartoons voices!

Is there any advice you can give for an aspiring animation student or artist trying to break into the business? Always being a student and exercise like you are an athlete. Be patient and think that you have the luxury to make what you like the most: enjoying yourself and people!
